AWS or Azure: Which Cloud Certification Should You Learn First?

AWS and Azure are the two dominant cloud platforms, and if you are starting a cloud career, picking which to learn first can feel high-stakes. Good news: it is a lower-stakes decision than it looks, and there is a simple way to choose. Here is how.

The short answer

Learn the cloud your target employers actually use. If you do not have a specific employer in mind yet, AWS is the safe default because it has the largest market share and the most job postings, while Azure is the strong pick if you are aiming at enterprise or government, where Microsoft dominates.

Both are excellent, in-demand skills. You almost cannot go wrong; you can only go slightly more optimally.

AWS: the market leader

AWS has the biggest share of the cloud market and, correspondingly, the most job listings. Its Cloud Practitioner is a friendly, no-coding entry point, and its associate certifications like the Solutions Architect Associate are among the most recognized credentials in tech.

Choose AWS if: you want the broadest job market, you are targeting startups or tech companies, or you have no specific employer in mind.

Azure: the enterprise favorite

Microsoft Azure is deeply embedded in enterprise and government organizations that already run on Microsoft products. Its Azure Fundamentals (AZ-900) is an easy, no-coding on-ramp.

Choose Azure if: your target employers are large enterprises or government, or you already work in a Microsoft-heavy environment.

The concepts transfer

Here is the part that lowers the stakes: the core ideas of cloud computing, compute, storage, networking, security, and the shared responsibility model, are the same across both platforms. Once you learn one deeply, picking up the other is mostly learning different names for similar things. Your first cloud certification is not a lifelong marriage; it is a starting point.

How to decide today

1. Check job postings in your target market and see which cloud appears more.
2. If it is a tie or you are unsure, start with AWS for the broadest options.
3. Begin with the foundational exam (Cloud Practitioner or AZ-900), not an advanced one.
