1.2 - Laptop display components
CompTIA A+ Core 1 objective 1.2 covers the components built into a laptop display assembly. The backlight provides the light behind an LCD panel, so a very dim screen that still shows a faint image usually points to a failed backlight or its inverter. The webcam that captures video for calls is mounted in the display bezel, and the Wi-Fi antenna wires are typically routed up the display bezel or lid to sit as high as possible for reception. Special or multifunction Fn keys, pressed with a function key, toggle features such as an external display or wireless radio. Expect scenario questions that describe a display-related symptom or task and ask which component is involved or where it is located.
Dim screen, faint image = backlight/inverter. Video for calls = webcam (in the bezel). Wi-Fi antenna wires = routed up the bezel/lid. Toggle external display/wireless = Fn (multifunction) keys.
Practice questions
1. Pressing Fn + a function key on a laptop to enable an external display uses which feature?
- A BIOS firmware factory reset
- Special/multifunction (Fn) keys (correct answer)
- The Windows diagnostic Safe Mode
- A scheduled disk defragmentation
Laptop Fn keys toggle features like external display, brightness, volume, wireless and keyboard backlight.
2. Which laptop display component provides the light behind an LCD panel?
- Digitizer
- Backlight (correct answer)
- Antenna
- Hinge
An LCD needs a backlight (LED, or CCFL+inverter on older units) to be visible; OLED pixels self-emit.
3. On many laptops, where are the Wi-Fi antenna wires typically routed?
- Through the battery bay
- Up the display bezel or lid (correct answer)
- Inside the CPU heatsink
- Within the speaker housing
Wi-Fi antennas usually run up the display lid for better reception; disconnecting the lid can weaken Wi-Fi.
4. Which component captures video for laptop calls and is mounted in the display bezel?
- Speaker
- Webcam (correct answer)
- Trackpad
- Battery
The webcam (with a microphone) sits in the top bezel; a physical shutter or privacy setting protects privacy.
5. An older laptop's screen is dark and a faint image shows. On CCFL panels, which part likely failed?
- The touch input digitizer layer
- The inverter (powers the CCFL backlight) (correct answer)
- The display lid mounting hinge
- The internal built-in loudspeaker
CCFL backlights need an inverter for high-voltage AC; a failed inverter gives a dim/faint display (LED panels don't use one).
6. Which laptop feature automatically dims/brightens the screen based on surroundings?
- The capacitive touch input digitizer
- The ambient light sensor (auto-brightness) (correct answer)
- The high-voltage CCFL display inverter
- The built-in touchpad/trackpad surface
An ambient light sensor drives auto-brightness, saving battery and easing eye strain.
